How to Rent a Car in Miami

Miami is a vibrant cultural centre of the Southern USA, blending historic Art Deco neighbourhoods with Cuban food, music and fashion, and one of the best-known beach scenes in the world.

If you’re planning to visit Miami, opt for a hire car to make the most of the city’s tropical coastline. From day trips to the Everglades to iconic drives towards Key West, the area’s most popular sites are best visited by road.

Miami is one of America’s great road trip cities, so you can be sure that when it comes to car rentals, Miami is well-equipped with hire locations to make it easy to explore the city limits and beyond.

Finding a car rental in Miami

Renting a car in Miami is a straightforward process. Florida state requirements mean you’ll need to bring a current driver’s licence, and you should also bring your passport.

If you plan to rent after you’ve arrived, you’ll also need a valid credit card for payment. To ensure a smooth rental process, the name on this card should match the one on your license.

The minimum age for car rental in Miami is 21, and drivers under 25 will need to pay a daily young renter fee. There may also be restrictions on the vehicle type you can hire, so it’s important to check before you book to see whether you’ll be able to hire the car you want.

Car rentals in advance from Miami airports

If you’d like to drive away straight from the airport, you can hire a car on arrival or reserve in advance, and visit the Enterprise branch at Miami International Airport to collect your car.

Booking in advance can open up pre-pay offers, so it’s worth checking before you fly to find a good deal.

Choosing before your trip also ensures you’ll have access to the full range of cars available from Enterprise, including our Exotics range.

An Enterprise branch can be found at Miami International Airport, in the Rental Car Centre. If you’ve reserved in advance, you can collect your keys there. The Exotics car range is available from this location, too.

Choosing a car rental when in Miami

Miami car rentals are also widely available from the city itself, and for visitors taking off on a road trip, we have several locations along the Miami stretch of the I-95.

For travellers heading out to the coast and looking to experience the thrill of riding with the top down along Ocean Drive, our Miami South Beach Exotics fleet includes luxury and sports cars made for enjoying this iconic beachside road.

Where to go in Miami

From nature reserves to nightclubs, Miami has it all. No visit to the area would be complete without taking a trip to Miami Beach, located a short drive across one of several bridges from the city proper.

Miami Beach is split into three sections: South, Mid, and North Beach. All of these areas are open to the public, and all are within walking distance from Collins Avenue, where you’ll find paid parking options.

For fans of the city’s legendary Art Deco buildings, South Beach has a concentration of hotels which showcase this geometric style of architecture. There’s also an Art Deco Museum within the visitor centre, which puts on local walking tours.

Day trips outside of Miami include the famous Everglades National Park, which is around 42 miles from the city centre, roughly an hour’s drive.
The Everglades is a subtropical wetland with immense biodiversity, where it’s possible to take airboat rides and glimpse Florida’s famous alligators, as well as Great Egrets, river otters and water snakes.

When’s best to travel to Miami

Due to its tropical climate, Florida experiences very high temperatures in the summer months.

For those looking to escape the colder European winters, Miami is a great destination between December and April, averaging between 20-23°C. These are also the best months for outdoor excursions, thanks to the low rainfall.

Festival lovers should visit in January, when the city’s Art Deco Weekend is held, a city-wide showcase that celebrates Miami’s architectural history.

Sports events are commonly held in spring, with the Miami Open at Hard Rock Stadium in March. Hard Rock Stadium is best reached by car, and is also just a short distance from our Miami North Dade branch.

Tips for finding the best car rental in Miami

To find the right car for your trip, you should first have a clear idea of what kind of vehicle you’ll need.

Travelling with family? An SUV will comfortably seat five people with space for all your bags. For larger groups, a people carrier can seat groups of seven to nine people.

If you’re planning a road trip, you might want to opt for an automatic transmission for long-distance driving. Automatics are standard in the USA, so you won’t usually need to request one.

Other things to consider are whether you’ll need a car immediately or would prefer to pick one up during your stay. Our car rentals in Miami include several hotel locations:

  • Miami Beach Fontainebleau Hotel
  • Miami City Centre DoubleTree Grand Hotel
  • Downtown Miami JW Marriott Hotel

These car hire locations provide convenient, short-notice rentals for those staying in or near the hotels.

Our Miami car rental service is quick and easy to organise.

  • First, select your desired pick-up location and dates through our booking form, and then choose a vehicle class.
  • Next, decide whether you’ll need any optional extras. These include choices like car seats and GPS. Children aged 4-5 must be positioned in a separate carrier, an integrated child seat or a booster seat.
  • Before completing your booking, you’ll be asked to review and pay. If you opt for a car rental at Miami airport, we’ll ask for flight details at this point.
  • Then, when it’s time to pick up your car, remember to bring along all the documentation listed above: your license, passport, reservation details, and your payment method.

Once you’ve completed this process, we’ll hand over your keys, and you can begin exploring the tropical wonders of Miami.
