Driving in France: What are the rules?

Those planning a road trip in France generally don't aim for the major highways; instead, they venture along secondary, country roads that are more intimate and picturesque. True, the speed limits are lower, but it's precisely this slow pace that allows you to truly immerse yourself in the journey.

In France, speed limits are generally 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on extra-urban roads, 110 km/h on ring roads, and 130 km/h on highways.

The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l: if you want to enjoy local wine tastings, plan accordingly and do not drink and drive. Fines are generally paid upon notification. Finally, when driving a rental car in France, remember that seat belts must always be fastened in both the front and back seats, and that lights must be kept on even during the day, especially in conditions of poor visibility.
