Renting a Car in the US
Renting a car in the USA is one of the best ways to explore America, whether you’re heading on a city break or an interstate road trip. This guide covers everything you need to know, from booking requirements to choosing the right vehicle for your trip.
What you need to rent a car in the USA
For international travellers with a driving licence written in a language other than English, we recommend getting an International Driving Permit (IDP). This is an official translation of your driving licence. You’ll need to apply for this in your home country, as it can’t be done once you’re already in the USA.
Requirements can differ slightly between companies, so it’s a good idea to book your vehicle ahead of time and check what you’ll need.
The car rental process: Step by step
1. Choosing your rental location
Car rentals in America are widely available across all major cities and many suburban areas. You can either pick up your car directly from the airport after landing or collect your vehicle locally at a different point in your journey.
2. Selecting the right vehicle
Before picking up your vehicle, you’ll usually select a vehicle type in advance - such as economy, luxury, or SUV. Your booking will tell you what model of car you’ve booked, but we might give you a different model in the same category on an ‘or similar’ basis.
3. Picking up the vehicle
To collect your car rental, head to your chosen pick-up location on the date and time you’ve selected.
A staff member will check your documents, make sure you meet the requirements (such as ID and insurance) and ensure you’ve paid. After that, you’ll get your keys.
4. Returning the car
You can return your car rental across the USA as long as you book with your provider in advance. Simply bring your vehicle to the designated location and time in your booking and drop off the keys.
